A few thoughts from my personal time in God's Word this morning about how to honor God. Certainly much more could be said but I hope and pray that this encourages you.
Matthew 6:33 - "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you."
1 Samuel 2:30 - "...I will honor those who honor me..."
One principle God has woven into the warp and woof of His world is that the disciple who values the reign of God over his life and who diligently pursue righteous living can trust God to satisfy his needs. God delights to honor those who desire to honor him above all else. God delights to honor those who make His glory their first and supreme object. But how does a disciple of Jesus honor God? How do we make His glory first place above all? Here are two simple answers that when rightly understood and applied have implications for every aspect of your life.
First, by believing in the truthfulness of God's Word. God's glory is tied to the veracity of the Scriptures. Thus, if we doubt the truth of God's Word, we greatly dishonor God. Beware of low views of Scripture which deny God as its author, treat it as though it is a fallible human work, and consider it insufficient for life and godliness. Rather, humbly submit to its divine truth and authority and God will honor you. Honor God's Word and God will honor you by conforming you into the image of His Son, restore your soul, sustain you in times of affliction, comfort you in your sorrow, strengthen you when you are weak, and guide you in times of confusion.
Second, by trusting God. Unbelief dishonors God but faith that takes God at His Word and trusts His power to perform all that He has promised to do greatly glorifies God. Do not be anxious. Our perfect heavenly Father cares for the birds of the sky and clothes the grass of the field. Won't He do much more for you whom He chose to save before the foundation of the world, knit together in your mother's womb, washed and cleansed by the blood of Jesus, and sealed with the indwelling Spirit? So don't worry. Rather, resolve to wholly and solely commit your ways to Him. Make His glory first and supreme in your thinking and acting. Trust Him with your life. Trust Him with your family. Trust Him with your money. Trust Him concerning everything. For as the Scriptures say, "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you." Honor God and He will honor you.
Of course, the first step in honoring God is by fully accepting His salvation provided for you in His Son Jesus Christ. Beware of trying to forgive yourself. It can't be done. Nor can you earn your own forgiveness or salvation. Beware of idolatry. If your honor is not directed to God who made all that exists, then it is directed to something else. Also, beware of thinking that your sin is unforgivable. Nothing and no one is beyond the limit of Christ's power and willingness to save. So I say again, the first step in honoring God is by fully accepting His salvation provided for you in His Son Jesus Christ. Turn from your sin, confess it to God, ask his forgiveness and he will cleanse you from all sin and unrighteousness. Value God's reign over your life and diligently pursue godly living and He will honor you.
